This students' work is especially important to me and my practicum experience because it was a learning opportunity to say the least. On this very day, my AT was away and I was working with a supply teaching who had been a teacher for over 30 years and had just retired 2 months prior, and was called back to supply teach. I always take the lead whenever my AT is away. This supply teacher was very prepared for teaching, had a whole bad and resources readily available which was really great. I learned a lot from her about classroom management and organizational strategies. There is a few problematic students in our class, but one in particular who was acting way out of line, due to the absence of my AT. I had informed the supply teacher of these problematic students, and they were identified in the supply plan. The supply teacher wanted me to work with the problematic student. We went into the hallway and I assisted him in focussing and completing the assigned work on the cycle of a bat's life. I had a great conversation with him about his actions and behaviours and about respect. We came down to a compromise and ensured that he was able to talk a way and move as a body break before working with him. More specifically, I continued a method I had researched and begun to use with him and a couple other students. More specifically, the 2x10 approach is proactive and focuses on positive child-centred conversation. I speak to these students for 2 minutes in this manner for 10 days. This approach is to ensure a positive student-teacher bond so that the students feels comfortable and welcomed. The hope is that this trustful relationship impacts learning in a positive way in their learning environment. It has worked with this student, however, I learned that incentive drives him and motivates him to complete school work. Rewards cannot always be the answer as this leads to unnecessary needs and dependence in the classroom environment and can even lead to bad habits at home. Moderation is key in these situations and in many aspects of life. I am proud of the completion of this students' work and his capability of working 1-on-1 in a less congested and distracting atmosphere.
